The air was cold that night; so cold that just as the evening star rose over the river, our bald eagle who was soaring home after a day of fishing, froze solidly in place in the air right over my head. I mean it. Froze in place up there! Even the wind froze that night, making it mighty hard to walk in the yard, let alone fly. He hung there above our house all night. Although it was a cloudless clear night, I lit my blowtorch and melted enough of the air to catch a peek at him up there, blotting out the stars. Come to think of it- the stars didn't move that night either. The evening star stayed right where it rose, touching the tree line over the frozen river. Come morning, the sun popped up anyway, it being hot and all, and then, things happened fast. The evening star and all the constellations shot forward like they were launched from a catapult, but that eagle just hung there against the bluing sky; it must have been 'cause the stars are a mite hotter than an eagle. Eventually, the wind began thawing out too, and suddenly that eagle rocketed off, and then slowed, took a gander at the sun, realized it was morning and headed back to fishing in the river, which was just starting to melt.

Now if you believe that one, I've got a tale for you about how the coldest thing on earth is a human heart without love, only this one's true.
